Guestbook for General Blog Comments

This isn't a true guestbook, but it is a place where general comments or questions about the blog can be posted.  These would be comments unrelated to specific blog posts - just somewhere to share some information.  We'll give this a shot and see if there are any takers.

You can find the link for the guestbook on the right side of the page near the top.

Please leave any comments or questions you have below by clicking on 'Comment'.  Thanks!

  1. Hi Nate,

It seems to me your pain could be the referred pain from radiculopathy/radiculitis or somethings like them in your spinal nerves. Have you had a neurologist ruled these conditions out with an MRI? Get well soon.

  2. Nate has got classic gout , believe me- It reads like it. There's nothing else like it.
Other conditions can co-exist, of course.

  3. Nate. I am truly sorry for your pain! Sympathetic and empathetic! Have you ever had your kidney function checked and sought out a qualified Rheumatologist for other 'reactive arthritic conditions?' Your attacks/flares are too frequent to just be gout without some underlying condition; kidney necrosis, diabetes, liver malfunction? It sounds like you are not getting the proper medical advice or not being honest? You quit beer, sodas, beef intake yet your frequent attacks with meds point to something more insidious or entrenched? From a fellow sufferer I understand and wish and pray for your wellbeing my friend !

  4. Anon - I have my kidney, liver and other organ functions checked monthly. They all are normal and no red flags have ever been raised about anything. I've also been tested for diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, lyme disease, sleep apnea, cancer, thyroid functions etc, etc, etc. However, I'm beginning to think that there may be something else here too. I have a doctors appointment Wed morning and will ask what else I can get checked for. The frequency of attacks, the constant tired feeling and generally just always feeling like crap makes me wonder.

Yep, no alcohol for 7 months, no meat for 7 months, limited soda (diet), 600mg/day Allopurinol, and I eat very healthy. I do only have one kidney, but again, I get this tested every single month.

Thank you for your thoughts and comments. I'll go over what I discuss with my doctor in a Wed post.

  5. This is probably T.H.E. B.E.S.T. W.E.B.S.I.T.E. that I've ever stumbled upon. I'm crying in sympathy of you as I am experiencing my own gout crisis.

I have been suffering from gout since I was twelve (probably even earlier) and almost 20 years later I just decided to stop being in denial and bit the bullet by going on allopurinol and colchicine.

I look forward to reading the rest of your blog and I hope that you don't stop.

    I wish you good health!

  6. Anon June 14 - I just checked this page for the first time in....ages. Thank you for your comment.

since the age of 12?? You have my sympathy! I know what you mean about being in denial with the disease. It took me 15 years until I started any real treatment. I really, really wish I would have started earlier as it would have saved so much pain and lost time.

Take care and good health to you too!

  8. Nate - My 28 year old fiance has almost an identical situation as you (has had gout now though for almost ten years). Couple questions - I know his chronic gout is awful for him, but you both being so young, I am so worried about him taking allopurinol for the rest of his life! I read how hard it can be on kidneys. What are your thoughts? And a kind of personal question - do you and your wife have children? I also read that allopurinol can cause infertility? Please, any help would be appreciated.
