One thing I must say about this latest gout attack is that it definitely has been different than any other attack that I've ever had. Oh, the pain is pretty familiar, but the way that certain joints and areas in my ankles and feet hurt is not normal. For instance, I will wake up and the achilles on my right foot will be extremely sore. This is the only area where the pain has been constant and persistent, by the way. However, the excruciating pain that existed in my left ankle the night before will have disappeared. As the day goes on, pains will spring up in my feet and toes for an hour or two and then go away. Usually in the evening, something, somewhere, in my left foot/ankle will really begin hurting, almost to the point where I don't even want to attempt walking. By this point, my achilles is feeling the repercussions of use throughout the day and is throbbing quite badly. As if that's not bad enough, the pain in my left foot/ankle will almost match the pain in my achilles. This usually goes on until bedtime. I will then wake up with the pain in the achilles being less severe and the pain in other spots almost being gone. Sometimes, though, I will wake up with bad pain in a completely new spot that then seems to go away after a few hours.
I've never had the pain jump around like this before. Sure, I've had many, many attacks in multiple joints at the same time over the years. In those cases, the attacks in each joint would last for days, if not weeks, before subsiding. The pain coming and going has never been this pronounced before. Maybe this is a good thing? Different joints are getting cleansed enough that the pain isn't lingering as long? I don't know.
Right now my achilles is killing me. I wish this pain would go away for a few hours, preferably at night so I can get to bed easier. This has been going on for over a week now and just does not seem to be improving. I'm not quite sure what I should do beyond waiting. Ughh, and it's only Tuesday........

Nate, I have gone through something similar, not the same though. Remember me saying about gout "surprise packages" in 8 different locations? The only thing I can think of is that because of the meds, SUA/MSU is dissolving and is causing the pain/attacks. However, this is just MY guess.
ReplyDeleteHang in there bro! I'll be able to carry you up the stairs in a short while. We'll do it about 5 times in a row so I can get a good workout while we're at it.
ReplyDeleteYou're not turning the inside of the house in to a Crossfit gym!
ReplyDeleteHans, that's pretty much the conclusion I've come to. I've read other's accounts and a lot of information regarding Allopurinol and the reaction to the drug for the first month or two and how it will cause attacks. It's just taking a lot longer for me since I've had gout for so long and have had so many attacks in so many different joints.
ReplyDeletePS - I'm sick of these types of surprises ;)
